Derek Singer began his career as an apprentice engineer in 1973 before going on to become a Petroleum Engineering Technician with Conoco UK Ltd in the 1980s. In 1992 Derek set up his own consultancy company, DSC UK Limited, which he ran productively for 5 years.
After a short break from the oil and gas industry Derek returned to the sector in 1997 as a Drilling Supervisor, working for a variety of Operators in the North Sea, supervising all drilling, tieback, completion and drill stem testing operations onboard the Magellan in Tender Assist Drilling mode for the BG Armada Field development and the jack ups GAXI and GAIV.
Having joined Altinex UK Ltd in 1999 Derek was seconded to the UKCS Health and Safety Executive as a consultant Drilling and Well Operations Inspector in 2001, where he was integral to the review of several challenging HPHT wells, technology projects, workover studies, coiled tubing cement operations and underbalanced drilling quantitative risk assessments. He then moved on to a career with BP, in 2005, as Wellsite Leader, working on the Schiehallion, Foinhaven and Clair Fields.
While at BP Derek was involved in decommissioning the Miller Field and extended reach drilling operations from the Bruce Platform, ensuring all work was completed to a high level of safety and delivered within budget.
In 2008 Derek was appointed to the role of HM Inspector – Well Engineering and Operations working directly for the Health and Safety Executive. Over a period of 5 years Derek oversaw the safety and regulatory compliance, through review of notifications, combined operations notices and verification schemes, of proposed oil and gas activities at gas storage facilities and of various drilling and intervention programmes conducted both on and offshore. During his time at the Health and Safety Executive Derek’s well control knowledge and expertise was instrumental in the performance of several high profile incident reviews – most notably post Elgin Franklin and Macondo.
Once retired from the Health and Safety Executive Derek moved to management positions onboard the Ocean Guardian for Diamond Offshore, managing rig maintenance and upgrade projects, as well as revising the rig safety case for operations in Irish waters liaising with the Irish regulator CER.
After more than 40 years in the oil and gas industry Derek has been involved in key management and supervisory roles spanning all types of drilling, completion and intervention activities, from straightforward exploration to complex HPHT and extended reach operations. Coupled with his experience as a UKCS Inspector, Derek is able to provide a unique and dual perspective on oil and gas operations, ensuring strong commitments to safety and productivity are maintained.
