From 1997 to 2001 he worked on secondment from Santa Fe TechServ Ltd for a variety of Operators as a Senior Drilling Supervisor with overall responsibility for the safe and efficient implementation of operational programmes, management of service personnel, drilling contractors, materials and logistics. During his time with Santa Fe Paul was involved in deep water projects West of Shetland, the Captain ‘B’ Subsea HSP development and Erskine HPHT operations. At the same time Paul began attending Robert Gordon University where he gained a Post Graduate Diploma in Drilling Engineering.
In 2001 Paul returned to onshore work as a Drilling Superintendent and Project Manager for ADTI Ltd until 2012, where he had overall responsibility for the management of on and offshore Wells Project Teams and detailed design engineering and programme development. Paul ensured that the health and safety of operations was maintained, government submissions and permitting requirements were met and projects were completed within budget. During this period, he managed more than 20 wells, conducted from semi-submersibles and jack-ups, under project management or turnkey contract agreements.
Paul accepted the offer to become ADTI’s Technical Director in 2012 becoming a member of the Senior Management Team. His primary role was the independent review and approval of all well design, engineering and operational programmes covering drilling, completions, well testing and abandonment activities, while offering full-time technical and operational support to both onshore Project Teams and Offshore Operations. In addition, he contributed to the continuous development and maintenance of ADTI’s Well Engineering and Management System policies and procedures, ensuring they remained functional and compliant with the latest regulatory requirements.
Paul also became custodian Graduate Recruitment and Development Programme for ADTI, selecting and employing eight Graduate Engineers annually (from around 1,000 applicants), mentoring and developing them over a 5 year period and enabling them to progress on to becoming Chartered Senior Drilling Engineers.
In 2015 he accepted a position as Regional Director with Aberdeen Drilling School, which lasted just 3 months before the position was revoked due to the oil & gas industry recession.
During more than 34 years in the oil industry Paul has been involved in all aspects of drilling, completion, workover, well testing and engineering operations offshore with experience of exploration, appraisal, development, ERD and horizontal drilling, ESP subsea completions, multi-well developments with subsea infrastructure, multi-lateral developments and ‘smart’ completions. He has extensive project management and well construction knowledge including tendering and contracting of drilling rigs and supporting services.
